Starck Speaks

Philippe Starck is arguably the most famous living designer, and certainly one of the most prolific. He has reached a phenomenal international reputation in hotel interiors, furniture design and domestic products. Starck has also designed a number of private dwelling houses and apartment blocks, commercial premises. An honest, enthusiastic citizen of today's world, he considers it his duty to share with us his subversive vision of a better world which is his alone and yet which fits up like a glove. Crazy, warm yet terribly lucid, he touches us through his work, which is fine and intelligent indeed, but most of all touches us because he puts his heart into that work.

Cool Fun in the Summertime

If you live in SF, you know that it won't get too hot during the summer months, so on those foggy Sundays, why not come to LIMN?

The San Francisco showroom will be open on Sundays for assisted viewing, starting May 31. A member of LIMN's design staff will guide you through your shopping experience. If you have specific needs, Sundays will be the perfect time to visit.

Of course, LIMN will still be open for unassisted browsing Monday through Friday, 9:30-6, and Saturday, 11-6.

Paris is for Lovers

Our cocktail reception with the company, and some of our design industry friends, was an absolute blast! Thanks to everyone who came last Thursday, and to those of you who didn't make it, you were missed ...

rote. I love typing on this fantastic fabulous typewriter. I once stayed in a hotel in Rome, called the Albergo Santa chiara, behind the Pantheon.

I wanted to write one of my two boyfriends a letter on a Compari Soda box.

They had this really old typewriter in the lobby and I really enjoyed using it and the irregularity of the ink and the letter alignment was so charming and sincere feeling almost like rubber stamps. xc

Four by Four: Vitra at LIMN

Interior Designers Re-Contextualize Classic Forms

LIMN San Francisco presents a first time exhibition with Vitra, titled Four by Four: The exhibition will take place from November 20, 2008 through January 20, 2009. The two design companies are new partners in offering a Home Collection for the consumer in Northern California.

A number of outstanding designers have been selected for the exhibition: Hella Jongerius teaming with Dana Avrish, Nicole Hollis, Charles De Lisle and Orlando Diaz Azcuy. Each will be showcasing their unique vision of Vitra for the home by assembling individual vignettes in the main entry courtyard of LIMN.

“Modern design can express warmth, charm, comfort and individuality,” says Orlando Diaz Azcuy of Orlando Diaz Azcuy Associates. “We paired works from the Vitra collection with romantic, accessible and friendly pieces to inspire the public.”

A press reception for the exhibition will be held on November 19, from 5-7pm and an opening party for the public will be held on November 20, from 5-8pm.

Some things never go out of style

Between 1927 and 1929, Charlotte Perriand while working in the design atelier of Le Corbusier, together designed sofas and chairs that have become icons of the Bauhaus movement and modern design.

They're combined innovations "deconstructed" the traditional expression of material use in furniture design. Perriand became famous for exposing the structure of the pieces she designed, i.e. the tubular steel frame on the outside of the cushions.

I've probably seen this sofa design a million times in my travels...but no matter how many times I see it, it always brings a smile to my face.

After Our Hearts, pt I

This is the first in what will be a series of what we at LIMN SF have fallen in love with. It may be a piece, or a setting, or just something that catches our eyes...

The Fun Pendent, by J Luger for Verner Panton. Designed in 1964, this design has the options of aluminum or mother-of-pearl discs, and can be purchased as hanging pendent, floor lamp, or table lamp. By the way, the bird house in the background is a cool piece of mixed media by local artist Lynn Criswell

No other piece in the showroom gets more scratched heads and confused looks than Fabio Novembre's Org table for Cappellini. The glass top appears to float, while dozens of ropes hang from it. In reality, six of the "ropes" are solid and support the glass.

Armani/Casa is a brand for the most discerning of tastes. Giorgio Armani's fashion aesthetic carries over into his furniture line, featuring clean, understated pieces paired with luxurious fabrics. Shown here, is the Traviata Sofa.

This is one you really have to see in person. Zaha Hadid's Moraine sofa makes the Mobius strip seem sexy. It is a striking sculptural design, but still manages to be comfortable and functional, in the right space. Manufactured by Sawaya & Moroni.
